Background of the Study
Lung diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and respiratory infections, are major health concerns worldwide. Smoking is one of the leading risk factors for these diseases, contributing to significant morbidity and mortality (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Tobacco smoke contains harmful chemicals that damage lung tissue, leading to chronic inflammation, reduced lung function, and increased susceptibility to infections (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control [NCDC], 2024).
In Nigeria, smoking prevalence has been on the rise, particularly among young adults and urban populations (Aliyu & Garba, 2023). Gombe State, known for its growing urbanization and socio-economic challenges, has seen an increase in tobacco use, raising concerns about its impact on lung disease prevalence (Usman et al., 2024). Despite this, there is limited region-specific research on the relationship between smoking habits and lung disease prevalence in Gombe State.
This study aims to investigate the influence of smoking on lung disease prevalence in Gombe State, providing data to inform public health policies and smoking cessation programs.
Statement of the Problem
Lung diseases remain a significant health burden in Nigeria, with smoking being a major risk factor (NCDC, 2024). In Gombe State, the increasing rate of tobacco use, coupled with limited awareness of its health risks, has contributed to rising cases of lung-related illnesses (Ogunleye et al., 2023).
Although national tobacco control policies exist, enforcement at the state level remains weak, and smoking continues to be a prevalent habit among various demographics, including youth and traders (Mohammed & Ibrahim, 2023). Without empirical data on the impact of smoking on lung disease in Gombe State, targeted interventions may be ineffective. This study seeks to examine the relationship between smoking habits and lung disease prevalence, providing insights for improved tobacco control measures.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of smoking among residents of Gombe State.
2. To examine the impact of smoking on lung disease prevalence in the state.
3. To propose strategies for reducing smoking-related lung diseases.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of smoking in Gombe State?
2. How does smoking influence lung disease prevalence among residents?
3. What interventions can reduce smoking-related lung diseases?
Research Hypotheses
1. Smoking is a significant contributor to lung disease prevalence in Gombe State.
2. The risk of lung diseases increases with smoking duration and intensity.
3. Public health interventions promoting smoking cessation will reduce lung disease prevalence.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on smoking habits and lung disease prevalence in selected areas of Gombe State. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining accurate smoking history from respondents due to recall bias and social desirability concerns.
Definitions of Terms
